From the first batch of Blue Bell Bitter in 1997 to this year’s latest collaborations with our friends and peers, the one constant is that we only brew beer that we like to drink. And while our creative muse sometimes takes us on some wild rides, more often than not we come back to our love for balanced, nuanced and sessionable beers, whether they are steeped in tradition or an experimental expression of a new idea.
One thing that’s not new is our love for flavorful base malts and the way we feel like the rest of a beer gets built around them, no matter how hoppy or stacked with unusual ingredients. Many of our beers start with British-grown, floor-malted Maris Otter, a cherished heirloom barley variety celebrating over 50 years as a favorite among brewers. Whether Maris Otter, Golden Promise, high quality German pilsner malt, or new varieties being developed in the U.S. and abroad, every Magnolia beer begins with a careful consideration of its malt profile and deployment of one or more of these special malts.
We’ve brewed over 2700 batches of beer over the past 20 years between our original 7-barrel brewery in the Haight and our 30-barrel brewery in Dogpatch. They’ve run the gamut from our core beers like Kalifornia Kölsch, Proving Ground IPA, Blue Bell Bitter and Prescription Pale to balanced and sessionable English-influenced milds and bitters, hoppy pales and IPAs, botanical infused beers, and barrel-aged beasts.
All of our beers are linked by our obsessive attention to detail and passion for quality. The path we’ve chosen is to never stop thinking about how we can be better—an unattainable but supremely satisfying quest for perfection that makes it worth getting out of bed every morning.
